Britpop was a cultural movement that dominated the British music scene in the mid-1990s. It  wasn't really a thing in the 1980s even tho there was some great groups in the 1980's.

Here's a breakdown:
Music: Britpop produced catchy, guitar-based alternative rock, drawing inspiration from British rock movements of the past like the 1960s British Invasion and the 1970s glam rock and punk rock.  It was seen as a reaction to the grunge movement coming out of the U.S. at the same time, which had a darker and more introspective sound. Cultural Phenomenon: Britpop went beyond just music. It was a celebration of British identity and cool, often referencing classic British fashion and art. It was part of a larger cultural movement called Cool Britannia.

Key Bands: Some of the most influential Britpop bands include Oasis, Blur, Pulp, and Suede, often referred to as the "big four" of Britpop. Other notable bands include Elastica, Sleeper, and The Verve.  The peak years of Britpop are generally considered to be 1995-1996, with the movement fading out by the late 1990s.
